How 3D Printing Works
3D printing allows you to turn a digital model into a real, physical object layer by layer.
At 12AMprints, we use two professional printing technologies: FDM (filament printing) and SLA (resin printing).
Each method has its own strengths depending on what you need—durability, detail, or a great price.
FDM Printing – Filament-Based 3D Printing
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) prints by heating and extruding plastic filament to create layers.
It is the most common and cost-effective method for everyday objects.
Best for:
- Functional parts
- Prototypes
- Budget models
- Phone stands, boxes, clips, adaptors, holders
- Large prints
Pros:
- Strong and durable
- Affordable
- Works for large-sized models
- Many material and color options
Cons:
- Visible layer lines
- Lower detail than resin

SLA Printing – Resin-Based 3D Printing
SLA (Stereolithography) uses UV light to cure liquid resin layer by layer.
This technology provides extremely high detail and a smooth surface finish.
Best for:
- Miniatures
- High-detail models
- Figures, decorations
- Smooth parts
- Small but precise components
Pros:
- Ultra-high detail
- Smooth surface
- Perfect for display models and miniatures
Cons:
- Slightly more expensive
- Not ideal for very large models
- Requires washing & curing (we handle it for you)
Video Explanation (SLA):
After Printing: Post-Processing
Regardless of the printing method, each print goes through the following steps:
FDM prints:
- Support removal
- Sanding (if needed)
- Cleaning
- Optional priming
- Optional painting
Resin prints:
- Washing in IPA
- UV curing
- Removing supports
- Polishing
- Optional painting
You can also order priming and painting services directly in our calculator or order form.
